Womxn In Motion Presents: Art Therapy with Ashley Mobley

Womxn In Motion Featuring: Art Therapy with Ashley Mobley

Welcome to this weeks Womxn In Motion feature. This week we explore the rewarding benefits of Art Therapy with Ashely Butler.

Before we begin tell us a little about yourself?
"Hi, my name is Ashley. I am a mother, wife, daughter, sister, artist and friend to the most beautiful people in the world. I live to travel, create and love. I studied Physiological Science and Art at UCLA and most of my career I have worked as a marking manager for professional athletes and talent. I currently work with my husband in real estate and starting a beauty brand."

1. What about painting inspires you?

"My art is usually inspired by whatever is weighing heavy on my mind at the time. Lately, I have been so entrenched in thought about the limitless nature of space and the universe. It's like a weight is placed on my mind every time I delve deep into the idea of how microscopic earth really is compared to the universe, yet it houses complex beings and nature. So this piece is inspired by the view of the earth from space and the debilitating thoughts of how amazingly small we really are. "

2. How has your expression of art been therapeutic for you?

"Art has provided me something that nothing else in my life has been able to achieve at the level art has: peace. I encourage anyone who needs a simple, yet powerful outlet, to try any medium of art to release all the negative energy that I know we all are harboring nowadays. The silky stroke of a brush on a fresh canvas, the unlimited color schemes and subject matter, they all have a way to transport you to another wold."

3. What has helped your mental health and what has helped you heal from self-doubt & stress?

"Honestly, taking a moment for myself every day. For new moms, their time is mostly spent changing diapers, playing with your baby, feeding them, washing dishes, etc. We always feel like we SHOULD be doing something constantly for our kids or our partners, but taking 15-30 minutes just to do something for you without telling yourself you need to be doing something else, can really help  clear your mind and reduce stress."

4. This past year has been profound in many ways when it comes to what it really means to empower ALL womxn. What has helped you feel empowered as a womxn and what do you feel has lacked?

"My sister and I were talking about this and the other day, how privilege has been known to be owned mostly by those who are white and who are men and that being a womxn of color is the most difficult combination you could be in this life. Not only do we have to work twice as hard to get somewhere in life, but we also have to work twice as hard to maintain our accomplishments. Though this is changing as new generations emerge, society really failed when it comes to teaching equality within race and gender."

5. What is your choice of physical movement and why is it important to you?

"I would say breathing any time you are moving. Being conscious of your chest rising and deflating. It's such powerful thing and can really help you to reduce stress and anxiety. There are so many ways to breathe that can help you relieve stress in different parts of your body and mind."
